Close Your Eyes was released in the Spring of 1998 as a limited edition of 50. Those were gone overnight. Here below are the groups thoughts on these songs and that time.

ERNEST: We recorded this awkwardly because we were a bit scattered then. Most of CYE was done with Juan and I laying down the basic tracks (drums and guitar), then having everybody else add their own parts. I left Austin for college in 1997 before the rest of the tracks were completed. I hope we release this again because it shows a real different side of the band.

PAUL: We did the main tracks in the attic at 2105 Comal St. That was in February of 1997. Then Ern, Juan and George were all out of town so Linus and I finished the recordings with Grant Barger at his house. It took us months to mix it and finally released it on my label the next spring in 1998. I think it's our strongest most timeless album.

Heavy fm damage

Under a bone white sky
The clouds united, why can't I?
I will stay with you tonight, OK?
Everything changes, Judgement Day
Something remains, I lost my way
If I had a hole in my head
For all the pressure to be set free
All of those dusty memories inside
They could get outside finally
Something remains, I lost my way
All my dreams could fly away
I've got a golden key to the invisible lake
I can't be late
I can't wait

Heavy fm damage

PAUL: The first verse is a nod to "New Year's Day" by U2. The poppiest song we've ever written.

JUAN: The rhythm pattern for the verses is ripped off from an Ohio Players song. I've felt that Here we Come to Your City should've been the first song on this cd- like countless albums that have a first track that's unlike the rest of the album; like a radio single that makes you wonder why you bought the whole cd instead of the cassingle.

ERNEST: Yeah, it sounded so good, like a top 40 hit, so I think I said "Man, this is going to do some heavy FM damage when it comes out" and the name stuck. Bass and kick drum interplay provides tasty nourishment.

Us + the bad past

You say that you've had it
Give until you can't take it no more
No more music after two
listening to someone singing the blues
I don't wanna sink that low without having to think
I felt so sick last night at the show
I saw you there and I want you to know
It's really nothing
In the end it's nothing really
You say that you've had it
Give until you can't take it no more
No more music after two
Listening to someone singing the blues
Between us and the bad, bad past
Between here and a cold, cold heart
Between us and the bad, bad past
Between here and a cold, cold heart

Us + the bad past

PAUL: This is two people, going through some blue times, leaning on each other.

JUAN: I really like the minimal drum parts on this song. This song really doesn't need drums so it's just about keeping time really.

ERNEST: Bad relationships suck. A four-track piece with Paul cracking up on the demo.

Mnemonic me

Your body is not your body
Close your eyes
Your feelings do not feel like your feelings
Close your eyes
Your mind is not your mind
I just want what is mine
It's easy if you let me
Close your eyes
Existence, existence, existence
nonexistence, nonexistence
You look inside the looking glass and your reflection
stares back at you
You are caught between the light in the back that reflect you
Your face doens't look likeyour face anymore
Choose the words that you will choose to use against me
Your life is not your life
It's easy if you let me
Close your eyes
Existence, existence, existence
nonexistence, nonexistence

It gets so dark at night

Mnemonic me

PAUL: Working title of this one was Sade. It's a psychological meltdown. Someone doesn't recognize themselves in the mirror, or feel at home in their skin.

JUAN: One of the recurring themes for the drumming on this album has to do with combining popular dance rhythms with everything else Glorium does. This song is kinda dark but some of the drum parts are almost hip-hop inspired.

ERNEST: An existential meditation on life. Paul's best lyrics in my opinion.

Doomsday kiss

What would you say if the war was over today?
Would you quit your job and meet me in the Sea of Tranquillity?
Will you call if I fall tonight?
Tonight, the seasons turn to dust
No stars, no moon, no shadow afternoon
You might catch something if you risk to steal me with a kiss
Bring me a tape of your latest 4 track end of the world
You might have picked up on a hint that I dropped
Crawl under your fence from a cop that I told off
It's the end of the world
Leaves, jet stream, sweat dream
Can I corrode your rust?
Tonight, tonight the kingdom comes undone
No stars, No moon, no comets on the run
Tonight, tonight, no burning midnight sun
You might catch something that I missed, Seal me with a kiss
Bring me a tape of your latest
You might have picked up on a hint that I dropped
Crawl under your fence from a cop that I told off
It's the end of the world
Will you call if I fall tonight?
Tonight, what would you say
tonight, If the war was over today?

Doomsday kiss

PAUL: This was a 4track piece ern showed me. this couple is holding on to each other, during wartime.

JUAN: This is another song that really didn't need drums. This is Johnny Hernandez' all-time favorite Glorium song. His band almost covered it for our last show in SA.

ERNEST: A four-track piece played on an open-tuned Sears Danelectro guitar. Used to be called "Four Track End of the World".

The spiral moat
(Instrumental)

The spiral moat

PAUL: The title is after a Remedios Varo painting called Spiral Transit.. Linus created this one alone. I recruited Scotty Hamilton to do some minimal background treatments

ERNEST: Probably Linus's most beautiful piece of music.

Moonbeam king

Check out what's going on below us
Searchlight, no sign of life
Above us
White noise on the black road
But your eyes are closed
Don't get scared, don't be afraid
I might be hearing impaired for the rest of my days
You and me, a real time hitchhike ride
To see the Moonbeam King
He knows everything
You and me, a real time hitchhike ride
To see the Moonbeam King
He sews everything
Between nowhere and the night there's nowhere to go
But you gotta cut through
You gotta get to the searchlight
And there's white noise all around me
The window's open wide
But your eyes are closed
Don't get scared, don't be afraid
I might be hearing impaired for the rest of my days
You and me, a real time hitchhike ride
to see the Moonbeam King
He knows everything
You and me, a real time hitchhike ride
to see the Moonbeam King
He blows everything away

Moonbeam king

PAUL: This is about travelling with someone you love. it's one of ernest's seeds which he planted very very deeply into enriched soil and watered every day.

JUAN: We used to play this song quite a bit live. We can't say that about most of the songs on this record. In fact, we never played some of them.

ERNEST: A lot of these came from four-track demos we did while I was living on the couch at Pop, Paul, and Linus's house on Navasota St. where we practiced. I was unemployed and had a lot of time on my hands to write music while Linus was at Texas French Bread.

White noise, black road
(Instrumental)

White noise, black road

PAUL: white noise, black road: best to listen to this one stoned.

ERNEST: Washes of sound to eliminate memory and location, inspired by putting the four-track tape in backwards.

Apemen at sea

Northwest monsoon
Too cold to enjoy the view
The clouds hang like ancient gods for you and me
For me and you, infinity
Between the forest and the sea there's a space of land
that's not far to reach
If it's out of reach, let's reach for it
Apemen at sea
The stars that hang in the sky that guide us through history
My stream of consciousness is fucked
Am I out of luck? Do starfish dream?
Have you seen her? I'm searching for my love
So I ask around
She's got hair of green and eyes of gold
Her skin is somewhere inbetween it's cold cream
breath hot like steam her words sink to the depths of me
History, what have you done for me?
History, what have you done to me?
what you done for me lately, huh?
Under the sea
That's where you'll find me
That's where I want to be
Under the sea
Searching for my love
Apemen at sea
Sailing the Sea of Tranqulity
Apemen at sea
Sailing the Sea of Tranqulity

Apemen at sea

PAUL: opening lines are inspired by a book by mishima. this is our 70s rock anthem about deep sea exploration and mermaids. the title refers to the feeling that us as a group are exploring the unexplored...maybe out of our element. we were pushing the boundaries of the kind of songs we wrote, and striving to be dramatic and moving without being totally crazy and out of control.

JUAN: There's some subtle relationships happening in this song rhythmically between the guitars and the rhythm section. Otherwise this song is pretty straightforward musically and it's structure is very similar to previous Glorium songs

ERNEST: Another barn-stormer in F#.

5 + 20
(Instrumental)

5 + 20

JUAN: Jorge heard this song for the first time when he recorded it. This song is an interesting clash of styles.

ERNEST: We never knew what to do with this one. I always thought of it as Nation of Ulysses guitar over a hiphop drumbeat, don't ask me why.

Skeleton keyring
(Instrumental)

Skeleton keyring

PAUL: the story unwinds

ERNEST: Inspired insanity.

Hold still

Hold still , hold still while I peel away
I'd like to see you after five
Instant replay rewound rewind
Remind me of what it means to be alive
Sound sound no sound is the sound of the blood encircling your heart
I'd like to draw a chart and hang it on the wall in orange and blue
Because opposites reflect
it's the sound background of my dream soundtrack
What say you about this war amor
It's more than war or flood or fire
Don't let it fall apart
If blood could speak we'd have a brand new start
Clear the air
All is fair in love and war and art/indifference
it's the sound background of my dream soundtrack
hold still so i can breathe your breath
hold still so while I steal your sight
hold still and make a move
make a move
you and me
infinity

were walking in the sand

the land no land no sand
no air

just glass
lots of unbroken glass

smooth creamy glass
you and I were celluloid silhouettes

creeping on the soil like crabs

from the depths of the dark black sea

where sharks asleep
are dreaming bloody dreams
so they can be at peace with their teeth

and scaly skin that cuts like glass

no matter what it's you and me and
the blood inbetwen us

inbetween the river of life is full of lotus leaves dragon flies and fish of gold are cutting creamy passageways in the gelitonous mazey labyrinth the inner space that fills our heads behind tired lids is a magnetic field
shadowy rings that multiply
and never return to home base
we create to steal each others' hopes
and fears and dreams
and return with them in hand
like thieves repenting
sending waves of
phosphorescent desire
fire

fire that falls down from the sky

and touches you

right between the eyes

with a heavenly kiss

you will know my love is true

opposite windows are open

and over the horizon

is a bloody moon

Hold still

PAUL: I wrote the main riff, and used for the 10196, which was a one off show with jason reece, conrad keely, jason mcneely, chris goyer and john monge. the layered vocals in the ending was inspired by patti smith's radio ethiopa. the subject is love.

JUAN: The intro to this song took a while to figure out. We got it to a point where I think it flows pretty smoothly. The long outro sounds like China Girl. This whole album has no 7/4 time in it. A rarity for us. I think that's a reflection of the fact that Jorge didn't have a lot to do with the writing of most of these songs.

ERNEST: Shhh, don't tell anybody, but the last section of this song is really David Bowie's "China Girl".

prove yourself to yourself
but not to me
i believe
i trust in you, I lust for you
Hold still

so I can touch your touch
it's too much,
it's too much

it's such a rush
tonight is the night

just you and I, my eye = your eye
like rain, like fog, like dew,
like cool sustain

like everything turns into you.
A film slow motion rolls,

movement is such a steady pulse.

it softly whispers in my head

The sweat that buzzes behind tired lids

that sound, that sound, that soundcoming back again
coming back again coming back again
I don't want to be a friend I want it all, I want you
and your everything
It's the sound background of my dreamy sondtrack
The trail that marks your place in time
It's so sublime so like life but not
so caught up in sleep
my deep down gut feeling
is speaking
it's talking to meand you are fast asleep,
climbing peaks, sailing seas,
puncturing
the sky
bending time

the depths are not
out of reach
if you let me I'll
be your tongue
your lung
your heart
your only one
your burning cloud
your mourning shroud
your seasons burn
your crazy love

oh let me be your blood
I'll take you away like a flood
